The Amazing Race: An Amazing Conclusion

My wife and I have watched every episode of this season's Amazing Race. It's been fun to watch and listen to my wife get all caught up in the drama and action of it all. Before last night's conclusion, we ranked the order that we thought each of the four couples would finish in. Out of the eight family members playing our little guessing game, I won. I had Adam and Rebecca finishing last, due to their lack of money in Shanghai and their total inability to function as a team. I said that Adam and Hayden would come in third, because Hayden is a whiner and Aaron had basically given up talking and listening to her at points during the game. I figured that would keep them out of the top two, but they would still beat out "the little ones".

Oh what a twist of events that occurred on that mountain. Hayden kept up with her whining from the moment she started trying to find the correct lock with the key. Meanwhile Rebecca showed her perseverence and determination, as well as her understandable frustration with Adam's idiotic remarks. So as the clock wound its way towards 7pm (the closing time of the mountain), the two girls were practically side-by-side as they tried lock after lock. Suddenly, with 15 minutes to go, Hayden decides she has had enough and wants to quit. It is obvious at this point that Aaron really doesn't care anymore and he quickly agrees. So the two take a four hour penalty and get their clue and begin to leave. Right at that moment Rebecca finds the correct lock and she and Adam receive their clue without penalty.

At that point, you knew that Aaron and Hayden were out, and all there was left to watch in that moment was how they would take to losing. They climbed on the mat ahead of Adam and Rebecca, but knew that were penalized beyond recovery. (Adam and Rebecca were literally standing behind them.) So, as Adam and Rebecca took third place and avoided elimination(again), Aaron did the incomprehensible and got down and proposed to Hayden. Naturally, there were tears of joy in that moment, but the look on Adam's face was more than priceless. You could tell that he could not understand what was going on in Aaron's mind, and to some degree I can understand that. Here's a person that you haven't been able to stand listening to or talking to for several periods of time in the past two weeks and now all of a sudden you want to marry her? Good luck to Aaron and Hayden on this ultimate journey, which I think might prove to be much more challenging than their Amazing Race adventures.

So with Adam and Rebecca lagging behind by almost 2 hours, it was down to two teams: (Freddy and Kendra) and (Kris and and Jon). For a multitude of reasons, it seems that everyone in the world was wanting Kris and Jon to win. They appeared to have the most fun of everyone on the race, and they consistently encouraged one another and seemed to play a fair game with the other contestants. It is for that reason that I correctly said they would come in second. I didn't think they would try anything too crazy when it came down to the wire, and I figured Freddy and Kendra would pullout all of the stops. (Freddy proved this after the pizza parlor Road Block, when he stopped a police officer and tried to get the officer to lead thenm to the final detsination, which he called "an emergency". To her credit, Kendra made hime realize his lapse of judgement, and to his credit he apologized to the officer.)

So, in the end, Freddy and Kendra stepped on the mat first and claimed the one million dollar prize. Kris and Jon happily stomped into second, taking with them several trips that they had previously won, as well as the admiration of millions of people. Adam and Rebecca took the third and final position on the mat, proving that a little bit of teamwork, a lot of luck and the improbability of such a disfunctional pair of individuals making it around the world alive can be incredibly entertaining to watch.
